I recently have begun the process of making an artist book of my 2002-2005 series The Unknown Writer. Recent advances in small run book making technology have made this possible. I was also inspired by hearing Stephen Shore talk at the Akron Art Museum a few weeks ago and how hew uses this same technology to produce small run books. I consider that a validation.

Walking in Akron
This past sunday I took an hour walk through downtown. Starting near the Beacon and heading North on Maiden Lane then over past the civic and ending up along the tow path. What was interesting was how the area is changing especially near the civic theater. Some kind of subterranean public space is being developed and hopefully that will include remodeling the decrepit buildings along Main Street. I look forward to seeing what happens there. The biggest surprise was how much I found to photograph. I have photographed in that area for years and yet here were all these new and interesting views that had not seen before. Lesson learned: park the car and get "out there". More images on my flickr page (www.flickr.com/people/andrewfoto/)

Photographing in the west.
At some point every photographer has to photography the west. After a few days in the very peaceful Canyon De Chelly we headed up to witness the mob scene at Monument Valley. The tourists were as interesting as the landscape. More to follow...

Akronography Flicker group
Today I set up a Flickr group based on Akronography. I am hoping to build a little community of like minded photographers who are inspired by the Akron experience. And give us a place to post weird and wonderful images.

Akronography Show at Summit Art Space

I am curating a photography show at summit art space this October and if all goes well it will be the first of a biannual event. I came up with the idea after reading a post on Not If But When and a post about Chicagoraphy. Around the same time I was trying to come up with a concept word that would describe what I was looking for with the show. Specifically I wanted to see how area photographers view their immediate surroundings. I know that we all look at or travel through a similar area but we can all have different experiences. I want to see how we photograph Akron.
What am I looking for?
• Images of Akron as it is today or in its recent past. Lets say images should be as current as possible BUT outstanding images from as far back as the late 1980’s will be considered.
• All photographic mediums (film, digital) will be considered.
• As a photography show I want to see prints (traditional or ink-jet)
• The obvious landmarks will be considered.
• The non obvious landmarks will be considered.
• It would be nice to see some new and exciting portrait work...
• Akron as an exotic place...
• Akron notables...
